What I’m good at:

I’m a mechanical design engineer by trade, training, and temperament, and am a competent program or project manager who is comfortable with leading & growing small teams.

Taking things that don’t exist yet and then going through the schlep and struggle to bring them into the world is what I do best, whether it’s designing and fabricating an initial prototype, taking a product through manufacture & NPI, or growing & developing a team of skilled technologists.

Far better at proactive work than reactive work. Able to move up and down abstraction levels fluidly and used to wearing many hats - I can balance hands-on, IC, and PM work as needed.

In terms of domain specialties, I lean more towards being a generalist and am comfortable working in many areas. However, I do have a few areas of deeper experience:

1) Highly integrated complex systems, where electrical, mechanical, software, [and sometimes chemical] domains all interact and affect each other. Keeps things interesting when troubleshooting could involve a CLI & some python scripts, a pipe wrench, or a multimeter.

2) High temperature systems & thermal design - I’ve been designing and building high temp (1000C+) furnaces and equipment for over a decade, absolutely love it, and suspect I will be continuing to do so for the rest of my working career. You can see some examples here
